Have you heard of Phu Quoc?
Phu Quoc is a beautiful Vietnamese island on the south side of Vietnam, next to Cambodia. It has miles of beautiful beaches and chock full of luxury resorts that are pretty reasonably priced. You do need a visa to visit Vietnam BUT you do not need a visa if you just want to go to Phu Quoc (which is what we did).
We stayed at a nice resort on the south side of the island near Sunset Town. It had beach access which was nice.
Breakfast buffets are really popular in Asia. When I think of a breakfast buffet in America, it's small and sad with limited options. The breakfast buffets in Asia are spectacular. The one in our hotel had ten food stations spread out further than the eye can see. It had a pho station that had different noodles daily. It had a make your own banh mi station. The Vietnamese coffee rivaled coffee shops.
We spent most of our time lounging at the hotel. But we did venture out for a few excursions. Here are the highlights:
Sunset Town, at the southern tip of the island, is known for amazing sunsets (hence the name). It's designed to look like a Mediterranean coastal city.
The Instagram famous Kissing Bridge is located here. The bridge is divided in two parts so two people can stand at each end and kiss each other. It's a little cringe for me but others seem to like it.
The world's longest cable car is also found here. It's length is 7900 meters which is about 5 miles. The trip is about 15 minutes. I love cable cars but even I thought this one was a little long, mostly because it stopped for 5 min in the middle when the wind was too strong.
The cable car ends at Hon Thom Island which has several amusement parks on it. I thought the island was just ok. Clearly the best part was the cable car.
Sunset Town has several shows. We saw 'Awaken Sea' which is a stunt show involving jet skis and flyboards. The athletic feats were impressive.
We also saw 'Kiss of the Sea' which is the main attraction at Sunset Town. It's a light and pyrotechnics show. The fireworks at the end were AMAZING! It was probably the best fireworks I've seen in person.
We visited the Suoi Tranh waterfall. It was dry season so it was more trickle than waterfall. But the hike was fun and good exercise after eating so much at the breakfast buffet.
I couldn't finish a blog about Vietnam without mentioning the food. I love Vietnamese food. Phu Quoc specializes in seafood. It was fresh and delicious.
Phu Quoc is worth a visit. Especially before the world finds out about it. You heard it from me first.
